Many managers seem to have ‘fallen into’ management because they were good at their service delivery work. There are myriad skills that are required for effective management. These skills are separate from our service delivery work. However, all too often managers can be expected to simply ‘pick these skills up as they go’.
This course is practical and participatory (and even a bit of fun!). It will involve input from the facilitator Glen Ochre, who has a passion for collaborative management practices that are easily understood and readily applied. There will be ample time for addressing particular challenges participants face as managers, and practicing new skills and processes.
The areas covered include:
- Understanding the unconscious dynamics at work in a team
- Building our own Emotional Resilience to handle ‘tricky’ encounters
- Leadership styles
- The micro-skills for good management
- Managing performance issues
- Encouraging team member’s development, confidence to initiate, and problem solving ability
- Addressing conflict
- Facilitating collaborative teamwork
- Making collaborative decisions as a team – which ones and how?
- Time budgeting – addressing workload issues
- Taking care of ourselves
